CREATING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AT 2 ASHLEY ROAD_

PROJECTS JUNE 2022

On a mission to transform the area, Related Argent approached A.LONDON to create a show home reflective of the vibrant neighbourhood. Associate Harriet shares her project ambitions and how it was achieved, including showcasing eco-friendly alternatives to feature throughout the 2-bed show home.

Harriet, can you tell us about your design intent for 2 Ashley Road?

“For this project, we wanted to create a sanctuary amongst the hustle and bustle of Tottenham Hale. With hints of bright colours, the soft colour palette emulates the local area and injects character and personality into the space.

When starting my research, we came across Zone Arts, an online shop with access to the best affordable art from the most exciting emerging artists in Tottenham, North London. Each room has a piece of art, carefully curated within the scheme. Unique to this project is a number of styling pieces that have been sourced from small local businesses, from the Craving Coffee in the kitchen to the Ben Graham sculptural soaps in the bathrooms - all of these celebrate the creatives living in and around Tottenham.”

Who was the target demographic for this project?

“The biggest target market was first-time owners, so creating a space highlighting their working habits, likes, and interests was key. For example, space to work from home is still considered important, so we needed to show off the flexibility of space by converting the breakfast bar into a functional work from home set up.”

Did you use any bespoke pieces in the apartment?

“One of my favourite pieces in the apartment is in the principal bedroom. We had a bespoke headboard created with the fabric inspired by ‘Northern Biscuit’ by Kirby Design. Designed circa 1965 by leading British textile designer Marianne Straub, this moquette was widely used between the 1970s and 1980s on the Northern, Piccadilly and Bakerloo Lines and London Transport buses. The geometric velvet fabric creates a striking, graphic statement, which we felt matched the brief perfectly.”

Can you tell us a bit about the importance of shopping locally?

“As a team we have become very aware of our design footprint and making changes to our designs to be a little more eco-conscious, where possible. With that, we have been focusing on shopping locally where possible and being mindful of the suppliers and brands we work with. Throughout the show home, pops of colour from toxic-free Lick paint and artwork from local artists married the rooms together, creating a cohesive, eco-friendly personality.

Can you name-drop a selection of the local brands you used to style 2 Ashley Road?

As mentioned, we used a selection of Ben Graham’s unique sculptures in the hallways and with his soaps in the bathrooms. We also stayed local by using Craving, an independent family-owned coffee shop founded in 2014 by Tottenham residents Matthew & Rachel Ho. Craving aims to bring people and creativity together to deliver the best experience possible for its customers. They are committed to quality and sustainability, and their coffee is amazing!

As a lover of colour (especially pink), I couldn’t walk away from a bunch of flowers from Greta in Flowers, picked up at Shoreditch market. If you head to our Instagram, you can spot them in our latest 2 Ashley Road reel.”
